Sword Fights Yay!

Here is a recap of the sword fights we did on Friday!

Fred and Gordon:

I liked the instigation of a duel with a glove slap! I also liked that instead of killing Gordon, you just cut his face to embarrass him. 

Peter and Clara:

The stabbing at the same time was very clever, I loved how neither one of you wanted to give up!

Maggie and Bruce:

A little slow paced, but good for not having much practice time! I liked the stepping on the sword as a disarm method.

Gina and Mikayla:

All of that because of a cinnamon roll....totally not going to steal food from Gina! Nice kill shot at the end.

Sam and Chesney:

I loved the knee cut at the end...so funny! Nice pacing of the fight!

Eli and Brittany:

Good fight pace! The corps a corps was really effective!

Anthony and Mike:

I still would have liked to have seen levitation from Mike, next time! Overall, good fight, and nice communication when you forgot choreography, safety is most important!

Overall, everyone did a great job! Woohoo! 

Chapter 8 & New Found Weapons!

Hi all-

Chapter 8 brought to mind important safety factors. What really caught my eye was the firearm effects since squibs just always seemed like a scary thing as well as shooting blanks. (RIP Brandon Lee) Now, on to the more positive attributes I have learned is:

1. Making an "Office Space" fight scene sounds awesome with the random use of office supplies. (Found weapons all around!)

2. The only acceptable way of a sword to "fly through the air" by way of tossing the hilt to your opponent and in keeping the horizontal space.

3. Pyrotechnics from those that are not experienced in that field is super lame! I was on a Broadway style show where they tried to integrate this big blast from the edge of the stage and I remember vividly how our older audience members would jump and not appear happy about it...

 As for new found weapons I think it would be fun to use as a weapon...

1. Umbrella
2. Stiletto Shoe
3. Hanger
4. Those pointy metal things used in the office to stab pieces of paper on it.

Oh and a Katana sounds fun but I know that wouldn't be something randomly found on the ground.

After reading the chapter all I could think was Jackie Chan... But over all I found it informative and the various "weapons" one can find and use. I found throwing weapons interesting, having actually won some stuff with my ax, knife, and other throwing projectiles skills I can see that it is pretty accurate in how its done. I also found the gun section a useful section and am surprised at what one must do to even use fake ones on a stage. I personally would use glass mug/cup as a pound weapon. Because it would be sorta like brass knuckles and would possible brake making it into a sharp jagged knuckle weapon.

He uses leaders... Nuff said...

Other Weapons

The chapter on found and miscellaneous weapons was very interesting. It went over everything from staplers to fire arms. Like Tatum said the section on throwing tricks was the most interesting to me and I really want to see it demonstrated. I think that would be a cool one to incorporate into a fight seeing as one can dramatically pull a knife out of their gut and keep fighting. (Spoiler Alert, this is going to be in my next fight.) Additionally the chapter outlined the ways to keep oneself safe when fighting with different sized weapons, and some good strategy to imply in said situations. I thought it was very helpful that the chapter laid out all the necessary precautions that must be taken legally in order to have even a fake gun on stage. Now that I know, I think if I am choosing a play to produce I may steer clear of one that involves fire arms. Also she mentioned that a play where someone gets lit on fire might be one to skip because of the danger and complexity of such stunts. Basically it was good reading and I learned a thing or two.

Found Weapons

It was fun to read about the found weapons in this book, and very interesting to learn different techniques of how to use them onstage. I especially liked reading about throwing weapons. I never would have thought there would be any sort of trick for throwing a weapon, but there is! How cool....

I personally would like to use playing cards as a found weapon. If thrown hard enough, they hurt so bad! I discovered this one summer when I was supposed to be playing poker with friends, but we ended up just throwing cards instead. These weren't normal sized cards either! They we're giant playing cards so they hurt even worse.

Anyways I would like to think that this is how cool I am when I throw cards, but actually it never works out that way because they always float gracefully to the ground D:

I'm not actually as cool as Twisted Fate from lol.

Fight Club Clip!!! Freddy VS Jason!

I am choosing the fight scene between Freddy VS Jason


Actors: 
 Robert Englund- Freddy Kruger
Ken Krozonger- Jason Voorhees

stunt double: Doug Chapman was Robert Englund's (freddy)
Glenn Ennis was Ken Krizinger (Jason)


Scenario- Jason kept killing to many people so Freddy decided to do away with him, but he was pulled out of the dream world by Lori a teenager on Jason's side. And Freddy is now in the real world and he must battle Jason to the death in order to kill everyone on elm street himself.

Style: Its sword mixed with razor blade claws along with hand to hand combat and martial arts.

Genre: comedic, very very expressionistic, and some swash buckling

It is comedic because two old fashion killers who can not die are battle to the death, not to mention they are complete opposites Jason is silent and large will Freddy is sarcastic and tiny. Its Expressionistic because it is un-realistic, there is no fatigue, and if any body else got stabbed a million times they would be dead unlike these two killers who would not die. And its a bit swashbuckling due to the fact of the whole back and forth nature of the fight.

Objective: both Freddy and Jason want to kill each other so that they can continue killing other people. Freddy wants to kill the children of Elm street and get his power back while Jason most likely just wants to go back to sleep. They both want to be kings of killing and must fight for the throne to kill.

Tactics: Jason is very straight forward, he likes to swing his machete around till he hits something, he is very slow, but makes up for it in strength by throwing Freddy around. He does not need brains when he has brawn. On the other side Freddy is small, he is quick and moves around fast using his quick reflexes and razor blades to slice Jason up at first, he then uses his brain and realizes its not doing much so he switches to a heavy attack by shooting oxygen tanks at Jason and stabbing him with metal pipes to keep him still while he beats him up. They then both get flung to a dock slash each other up and end they both die.....kind of

Obstacles: They are both immortal so fighting is not going to do them much good since they both cant die. Lori the teenage girl is an obstacle for Freddy sense she sides with Jason ( even though he killed All her friends) and keeps helping to try and kill Freddy.

Why did i choose this fight?
I love Freddy VS Jason it is one of my favorite movies, who doesn't love two legendary monsters battling each other. Also its in the spirit of Halloween.

Fight Club Clip

I am choosing the fight scene between Achilles and Hector in Troy.


Actors: Eric Bana- Hector
Brad Pitt- Achilles
Orlando Bloom- Paris

Stuntman- They preformed their own stunts

Scenario- Hector must fight Achilles Because his brother Paris Refused to fight Menelaus.

Style: First part of the fight is with shield and spear but later they use swords.

Genre: Realistic and Dramatic.

I think the fight is realistic because the moves they use are not over the top or unrealistic. They look like what you would see in an actual fight doing the period of time its in. They also show signs of fatigue, as you would see in a actual fight. I choose Dramatic because of what is at stake in the fight.

Objective: Hectors Objective is to protect his city and people. And to protect his wife and new born son. Should he lose not only would troy lose their best General but also their best warrior.
Achilles Is fighting not to protect anyone but because Hector killed his cousin thinking it was Achilles.

Tactics: Hector uses a more defensive fighting stance blocking and countering until he uses his sword then you goes on the offence. He uses his shield as weapon bashing and striking his opponent.
Achilles uses his superior agility and strength to take the offence in the beginning of the fight but must take a bit of a defensive stance toward the middle of the fight but due to his better endurance and the fact he is literally invincible unless someone can cut his heel. He overpowers Hector and kills him.

Obstacles- Hectors has many obstacles. The fate of troy rests on his shoulders. His people are counting on him to lead the army of troy to victory and protect them. His brother needs him to win so he can keep his love toy. And of course Achilles who is the greeks secret weapon nearly immortal in battle and a instrument to increase greek moral by being on the battle field.
Achilles only real obstacle his to protect his heel...

Why I choose this fight?
I choose this fight because I love historical films whether they be base on myth or reality. I also enjoy epic realistic fights. But mainly because the cinematography in the fight was masterfully done.
